Our Unique Approach to Helping You Overcome
Type 2 Diabetes

So you have have a diagnosis of Type 2 Diabetes.  You were labeled then prescribed medications according to your A1C number.  Then you were told to diet, lose weight and exercise.  You may have seen the dietitian who told you to eat whole grains and cut back on saturated fat, but each visit to your doctor seemed to bring more drugs. Energy dropped, zest for life plummeted, the spouse says your tired and cranky.   Then came the complications.  Chest pain took you to the ER, thankfully the EKG was normal and you didn't have the bypass grafts like your neighbor.  The foot tingling turned into pain and now another medication.  Oh no, sleeplessness and erectile dysfunction.  The realization has come...this will shorten my life.  So you go online and try the herbs and diets with short-term hit and miss results.  NOW YOU'RE HERE.  Thank goodness.
We have seen it all, heard it all.  All the complications...blindness, strokes, bypass surgery, kidney failure, amputations, heart failure, neuropathy.  We have heard the frustrations...not having the energy for home, then work, becoming disabled, losing relationships, not being there for family, becoming depressed, losing the will to live. We have also witnessed the turn around, the reversal, the return to normal life, normal weight, no medications, high energy, enjoyment of friends and family.  How do we do that?

You probably already know that Type 2 Diabetes is considered a reversible syndrome.  Numerous studies have proven that there are dozens of independent factors that can each reverse the course of diabetes.  How does one know which factors to treat?
Most often, Type 2 Diabetes develops from Metabolic Syndrome, which means your metabolism no longer 'burns' fuel efficiently.  Left unchecked, it turns into diabetes which ultimately means organs are expected to decline, leading to complications.
Think of high blood sugar as the warning 'check engine' light on your car dashboard. You know there are many problems that could make that light flash.  This metaphor is very relatable for Type 2 Diabetes.  If you've had Type 2 Diabetes very long, you've seen your blood sugars go surge with illness or major stress.  Studies have shown that there are over two dozen underlying issues like this that can cause blood sugars to rise.  From a scientific perspective, these issues are inflammatory, causing a chain reaction of cellular processes which demand higher blood sugar. Interestingly, type 2 diabetes is almost never due to a lack of insulin as we have been led to believe.
Sadly, these underlying causes of inflammation are neglected and not tested under the current model of care.  Why?  Because, only a few lab tests are needed to determine which prescription to take and these tests cannot detect the true underlying causes.  Even more sad is that by following this once, well-intentioned, but ignorant plan, the underlying sources of inflammation continue to erode your health and they can be even more dangerous than high blood sugar.
The model of looking for underlying sources of inflammation is called ‘Functional Medicine’.  It is a way of treating chronic illness, and it's a paradigm practiced by all pedigrees of doctors: MD's, DO's, DC's, ND's, LAc's, NP's, all that can provide primary care. If you watch PBS on TV you have seen many celebrity Functional Medicine doctors. I know.  I have met many of them at the Functional Medicine conferences.
The Functional Medicine approach looks at the numerous underlying reasons that are unique to each person who develops Type 2 Diabetes: genetics, toxicity, hormones, nutrient deficiencies, infections, diet, lifestyle, stress, immune and autoimmune issues...etc.  Most people have numerous causes of their high blood sugar.  We identify these causes. First we do complete and thorough history to get to know your body.  Then we run tests, not just the usual, but a wide array to analyze how optimally your body is functioning and where it needs to be better.  Next, we address these 'causes' with targeted, tested nutrients to optimize cellular and organ function. Lastly, we test common foods you eat to see if you have antibodies to them or if they cause inflammation.  This is how we develop a food plan SPECIFIC FOR YOU. We do not count or reduce calories.  In fact you must eat frequently and a lot.  We simply remove offending foods. We also adjust lifestyle factors that affect your health. After we optimize the underlying inflammatory causes, then you can eat without worry from the selection of foods you have learned that help keep you stable.

The results we see for Type 2 Diabetics are:

  • Lower and stable blood sugars and A1C
  • Reduced or eliminated medications
  • Remarkably increased energy
  • Weight loss without exercise or calorie restriction
  • Eating without worry of rising blood sugars
  • Identifying and correcting the real underlying causes as proven on follow-up laboratories
  • Reducing the statistical risks for complications
  • Achieving partial or full remission from Type 2 Diabetes
